Abstract

The Victorian Parliamentary Library built an application to automatically locate and download media releases using the RSS feeds of political parties. Using the OpenCalais web service to tag items with relevant semantic metadata has improved the Library’s workflow and increased the usefulness of the database, by helping users discover directly linked items. The benefits of using these tools and problems encountered are discussed.

Abstract

Monash University Library works in partnership with other areas of the University to strengthen the research and education agenda. A key component of the Library’s contribution is to students’ development of information research and learning skills. Learning material is delivered in a multitude of ways. Developing capability of Library staff is equally important, enabling the Library to contribute effectively to University strategies, including those related to teaching and learning. This paper presents an evaluation of an online course designed for Library staff to develop their capability to create e-learning materials for students. Results suggest the approach was effective whilst identifying areas for improvement.

Abstract

In 2010, the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) Library began a major review of online information literacy and learning support. The review was conducted in response to changes in the academic environment. The goal of the project was to develop digital literacies of our community in this new learning environment and to firm our collaborative relationships with the units that provide assistance to students on campus. The end result was the creation of the Study Skills portal, which saw us combine our information literacy tutorials, redevelop our academic writing modules and introduce new modules on graphics and social media.

Abstract

The premise underlying this paper is that the cultural collecting sector, that is, galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAMs) have established description practices, communities of practice, and shared interest in collaboration and exploiting Linked Open Data (LOD) technologies to improve resource discovery of cultural collections online. The question posed is a means of unpacking: what LOD means in technical terms; what other technologies support resource discovery; what impact using LOD might have on collecting sector description practices and more widely in other sectors with increasing levels of openness in the provision of data and metadata, such as eResearch and government sectors.

Abstract

Anzacs Online is the Memorial’s ambitious 1915 Centenary project, which will make the Memorial’s most important collections available for all Australians online. The project will involve the digitisation of hundreds of collections to be added to the website, creating a comprehensive digital archive on the ANZACS and their deeds, and on the wider Australian experience of war. This represents a new era of digitisation for the Memorial; we will be embarking on digitising collections that involve different processes and web innovation to make them available online.

Abstract

Streamed video is the latest type of content to gain the attention of educators and librarians. This paper examines the take up of this new resource type at Curtin University Library with particular attention to the use of individual streamed titles on the Kanopy platform. It includes reflections on the academic areas which are so far most engaged with streamed video materials, on the particular complexities they present for acquisitions departments, and on usage statistics for the first year of effective operation.

Abstract

What’s on the telly? Neighbours, NCIS, Top Gear? What to watch on television is a common question asked nightly across the country, by television viewers. Some of these viewers are academics at the University of Queensland, who are inspired to use television content to support student learning. This paper illustrates issues which the Multimedia Service of the University of Queensland Library has encountered in delivering offair content (recorded free-to-air and subscription television and radio broadcasts) to academics and students via online video streaming technology, in accordance with the Screenrights licence.

Abstract

A collaboration between the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the State Library of Victoria and other Victorian cultural organisations has developed high quality, interactive digital content accessible to all Victorian schools. In this innovative arrangement, the Department engaged the State Library of Victoria to ensure a strong project management framework was established to underpin a complex and multi-layered project. All stakeholders benefited from participation in the project, through increased capacity and understanding of engaging, curriculum-linked digital content for school education.
