Abstract

2011 saw a seismic shift at the University of Adelaide, with the rollout of nearly 700 iPads to commencing first year Faculty of Sciences students. The iPads were symbolic of a broader move by the faculty to reinvigorate undergraduate teaching and learning. This paper will look at the implications for the library of a faculty making significant changes. It will examine the impact of the changes, namely the move to eTextbooks and the practical and pedagogical challenges of embedding information literacy in SCIENCE 1100, a new flagship first year science course with a student-iPad coverage of 100%.

Abstract

Imagine walking into an academic library and finding no service desk and no queues. There are friendly staff who greet you and ask you if you need assistance. You are then directed to a self-service check out, a workstation or to a consultation room. This is the new reality at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Library. This paper outlines the planning, design features and service model of UNSW Library’s Help Zone, including the imaginative use of space, details on changes to staffing work and structure, and responses from customers and library staff who work in the Help Zone.

Abstract

Social media has become a communication environment that is not just used for individual network building, but also for advertising, product promotion and service delivery. This paper examines the adoption of social media as an education platform that has been used to deliver part of the content of a university-based subject. A Facebook group space has been used to deliver workshop-based education and activities. While this paper focuses on Facebook being used within a university-based subject, the discussion is applicable to other educational environments, including internal staff training.

Abstract

SLURP is a homegrown digital ingest system and by its very nature a disintermediation tool. The State Library of Western Australia sought to develop a way to manage and provide access to digital content. From labour intensive, hidden, and uncontrolled sets of discontiguous processes, we are now `SLURPing’, using the State Library’s Limber and Useful Reformatting Application. This paper reflects on the multiple needs the State Library had in order to manage digital content and processes. It explores the development of SLURP and showcases the SLURP solution. It also identifies possibilities for the future and outlines opportunities through a `warts and all’ approach to application development. In sum, this paper demonstrates how starting with a solution helped to frame the questions we should have asked at the start.

Abstract

This presentation describes the developing commercial and practical application of new profiling methodologies using evolving metadata standards for relevant digital content. Drawing from past print practices, it illustrates how the historical boundaries that have separated the methods of content discovery and acquisition into distinct commercial and library operations (such as monographs, e-books, serials, journal articles and datasets) must be trespassed in order to assure the continued health and relevance of academic libraries and the industries that support them. It concludes by discussing the benefits, including cost-savings, streamlining and improved support for teaching and research, these new harvesting methods provide.

Abstract

The OPAC, being a well-structured metadata resource with open extensibility through a well-understood ontology, should not be neglected as an effective path to effective resource delivery. Combined with an open source approach the OPAC can be re-invigorated as a metadata hub. Through web 2.0 and service layers such as OAP-PMH and by importing metadata from existing electronic sources the traditional OPAC and service as a search interface through to both print and electronic resources.

Abstract

Repositioning Brimbank Libraries for 21st century service delivery
Brimbank Libraries have been repositioned for 21st century services delivery through the implementation of technology, changes to work practices and redevelopment of library buildings, and each of these processes has contributed to the provision of contemporary services and programs. The key driver for the realignment of service delivery was, and is, the needs and aspirations of the community.

Abstract

In December 2009, the Victorian Government Library Service (VGLS) was created by transferring library staff in all Victorian Government departments and four of their agencies to the Shared Service Provider, Department of Treasury and Finance. VGLS builds capability across the Victorian Government by providing reference services to all Government staff and value for money in publication purchasing. In October 2010 funding was secured to purchase a suite of systems with a range of integrated functionality way beyond the vision of any legacy services. With the system implementation and the unification of the service continuing, this paper provides an update to the library industry on this extraordinary transformation.

Abstract

Recently Deakin University implemented a new Learning Management System, Desire2Learn (D2L). D2L is a new generation e-learning platform that offers an intuitive interface and allows for a flexible approach to learning. Deakin University Library partnered with faculties during the transition to D2L, and through that systemic collaborative approach, had the opportunity to embed library resources into the University’s LMS. This paper concentrates on the work undertaken by Deakin University to integrate library resources and services into D2L. You will discover how the library created information widgets, and built systemic partnerships with academic staff and University divisions for the benefit of the wider student body.

eScience, or in general eFuture, requires new generations of knowledge access capabilities. Research libraries need to re-think their access strategies towards a new access framework, covering R&D information beyond traditional literature, OA resources, research data, institutional knowledge assets, with all in an international scope and integrated/embedded into research processes. A number of research libraries in China are moving to innovate and experiment some components of this framework, including NSL’s Integrative Knowledge Infrastructure Initiative, CAS OA Initiative, CAS IR Grid, Chinese IR Alliance, CAS Researcher SKE Initiative, and CAS International Access Alliance Strategies.
