Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions announced

Birds of a Feather sessions are an opportunity for like-minded individuals to come together and chat informally external to the hustle and bustle of an event. For this year’s Tech Camp, we’re having some craft sessions!

Tuesday July 18: Knitting

Host: Amy Miniter

Knitting – aka the art of looping loops into other loops – is a great mindfulness activity and a great way to make a personal contribution to recurring ugly sweater trends. Knitting is a traditional activity with a rich history in many cultures in and around Europe – think Ireland, Estonia, Finland and so many more. Knitting from a pattern has lots in common with the logical thinking we need for coding, especially when we ‘declare’ stitch types or enter loops to repeat a part of a pattern.

What do I bring?

Needles and yarn – or another portable craft project of your choice. We have some spare knitting things, but we can’t guarantee that there will be enough to go around.

Wednesday July 19: Origami

Origami is the name commonly associated with the craft of paper-folding. Sheets of paper are folded into models resembling plants, animals or other objects, or into complex, sculptural shapes. Origami is a great STEAM activity that teaches concepts including symmetry, geometry, precision, concentration, hand-eye coordination and sequential thinking. Origami also has a mindfulness dimension, as it is a quietening activity that encourages us to focus on the present.
