Abstract

This paper provides an analysis of collaborative wikis managed by the New South Wales public library Reference and Information Services Group. The Reference Excellence wiki and the Readers Advisory wiki are examined to explore the development of collaboration and community amongst and between the participants. There is a discussion of the different purposes of the wikis, their effectiveness, planning, outcomes, time frames and software. How the communities of writers and editors have developed is also discussed. Why people are attracted to participating in and contributing to the different wikis is explored.

Abstract

This paper investigates the customer service benefits of using Vocera badges, which utilise a portable wireless technology (WiFi), to facilitate roving reference service. Use of portable voice communication devices allows the help to be taken to the people and away from service desks. These communication technologies allow library staff to easily access the expertise of other staff. There are no library uses of Vocera devices in Australia at August 2007.

Abstract

Providing connectivity to public libraries has been a State Library of New South Wales priority since 1997. Without content and the skills for effective use of this content, connectivity is of little value. This paper explores initiatives to enhance the use of online content. Building skills and confidence in staff and clients are important elements in maximising the benefits of enhanced connectivity.
