Abstract

The project is an assessment and evaluation of 221 Australian public library websites to determine whether they provide basic information to patrons. By replicating a study done in the U.S., the researchers determined what information was present on 20 variables.

Abstract

Yarra Plenty Regional Library (YPRL), with its partner organisations the City of Whittlesea and Whittlesea University of the Third Age (U3A), has been funded to establish a Digital Hub at the Mill Park Branch Library in South Morang, to provide residents with training in the digital literacy skills necessary for participation in the National Broadband Network (NBN)-enabled digital economy. This paper presents results from a research project designed to explore the impact of the Mill Park Digital Hub in its first year of operation, focusing on the role of public libraries in both engaging and educating local communities.

Abstract

The development of wireless technologies over the past twelve months has seen rapid expansion of the types of services that can be provided to mobile phones and personal digital assistants, with much more to come. Libraries must acknowledge the change in communication methods as a long term opportunity and begin planning for expanding market share by developing different types of services that take advantage of the new medium. The City of Joondalup Libraries have trialled a wireless website that offers basic services in order to better understand the challenges of the future.

Abstract

The SWIFT Initiative is a proposal for Victorian public libraries to collaboratively share the operation of one library management system to achieve improved service outcomes for library users plus operational and cost benefits for the participating libraries. It is envisaged that over time all Victorian public libraries would participate. This paper is about two aspects of the SWIFT Initiative. The paper covers the underlying reasons that prompted consideration for the proposed project and an overview of the business case prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Through substantiation of the validity of the proposal, the business case was intended to persuade libraries and Councils of the merits of the project and to participate and for the Victorian State Government to provide a special funding grant to assist with the initial establishment costs of the collaborative venture.

Abstract

Australians are avid seekers and consumers of information in a great variety of forms. The National Library is working with five public libraries to better understand the information resource needs of Australians. Information Australia is a twelve-month pilot providing a more integrated approach to information via a web portal for Australians. This paper outlines the development of the pilot portal, including policy and technical issues and future possibilities for a service available to all Australian libraries.

Abstract

This paper investigates what drives online data use in 60 public library and council sites across Victoria. The results suggest that simple measures, such as hours of opening and the number of terminals, are not sufficient to account for the variations in use across the sample sites. The results also suggest these simple measures do not provide adequate data for operational and policy planning. By analysing the Internet data used over twelve months, and through case studies analysis, this paper explores what drives Internet data usage and how libraries can take greater control of their data requirements and costs.

Abstract

This paper outlines the course of action taken by Public Library Services to plan, implement and evaluate a wireless pilot project for the South Australian Public Library Network. The paper is a non-technical look into the considerations given to security and authentication issues and discusses the management of the technology from an infrastructure and library management point of view.
