Abstract

This paper describes and illustrates the new processes that CAVAL is using to convert content into digital form. The research and development process began with the purchase of a Kirtas 2400 RA Book Digitising device in 2008. This page-turning device now underpins the provision of high quality digitisation services for books and bound volumes. Issues discussed include image enhancement, file format options, differing criteria for preservation and digitisation and the potential integration of complementary services such as metadata harvesting and copyright permissions management. More recently a facility to digitise large format newspapers and maps has been developed. Much of the digitised content created has now been made available via the web providing access to full-text searchable information that was previously almost impossible to find and access.

Abstract

The aim of the ENZB project at the University of Auckland Library is to provide a corpus of significant material published about New Zealand in the first two thirds of the 19th century. This paper looks at design parameters for the database and technical processes used to convert printed text and images to electronic format for presentation on the web. The ENZB is an in-house project using FineReader 7 OCR software to produce TEI-compliant XML files. b-engine software produces HTML for the web and links text to images of the original pages.

Abstract

This paper discusses some of the key principles of the State Library of Victoria’s recently released Digital Preservation Policy and how these were applied to a heritage map digitisation project, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works Maps Digitising Project. Principles discussed include image capture standards, image metadata, storage and media. The project presented many challenges and twists and turns along the way- a surprising adventure for the project team.

Abstract

The Universal Digital Library epitomises international collaboration with partners from USA, China, Egypt and Australia spanning academia, Government and religious institutions as stakeholders. Nearly 600,000 books have been scanned so far and most of them are available for free browsing.

Discuss the Indian Language Technology Research that was stimulated by the vast information base made available by the UDL project. The efforts to connect the users to content using mobile vans, Internet based dissemination and the personalised Digital collections are compared. The talk concludes with the discussion on the issue of copyright and presents a novel idea of a “Consortium for Compensating for Creating Contents” – the FourCs.
