VALA Events 2021: Leaning In with Emerging Leaders

Emerging leaders who are supporting their Directors, working within leadership teams, managing operations and leading small teams are invited to participate in a facilitated discussion about how you develop your skills to perform at your best, and what kinds of challenges you face. Join VALA Committee member Carmel O’Sullivan for this first Leaning In meeting directed towards new and future leaders in the GLAMR sector.

This 1-hour event will be run as a Zoom Meeting.

Topic: Emerging Leaders

As an emerging leader, you may be in a position where –

  • you might not always have control, but you do have responsibility.
  • you can see the direct impact of decisions on clients and staff – and can sometimes (but not always) influence those decisions.
  • you need to support Directors who may be under enormous pressure or support staff who may be having a difficult time, and somehow look after yourself at the same time.

How does that feel? What skills do you need to manage in that environment? How do you approach skill development? What’s the mix between technical skills, management skills, and personal development?

VALA Host: Carmel O’Sullivan

Carmel is Director, Library Services, and provides leadership and strategic direction for the Library at the University of Southern Queensland. The Library connects the USQ community to information and services to enable learning and research success. The Library sits within the Education portfolio, consisting of Library Services, the Officer for Advancement of Learning and Teaching, and the Digital Life Lab.

To keep it conversational, inclusive and personal, we’re limiting numbers to 25.

The Emerging Leaders Leaning In is free to attend.
