VALA Annual Report 2012/2013

VALA has had another busy and successful year in 2012/13.

One of the main items for VALA this year was the selection and implementation of a new Secretariat. The Good Work Group was awarded the contract, with Lesley Ryall taking up the role of Executive Officer. Alyson Kosina has worked diligently in providing a successful handover to Lesley, and we are pleased that we will be retaining the services of Alyson as the Editor for VALA2014 Conference, and hopefully beyond.

VALA Annual Report 2011/2012

The highlight of the 2011/12 year was, of course, VALA’s sixteenth biennial conference, held in February 2012 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. On the theme “eM-powering eFutures”, the conference attracted a near-record number (960) of delegates from throughout Australia and overseas, including 41 from New Zealand. Following two conferences with sold-out trade exhibitions, VALA took the big step of hiring additional exhibition space, enabling the expansion of the exhibition. This move was successful, with 105 booths sold (up from 90), and additional space for the Red Carpet Area and for a central Network Hub. For the first time, VALA used barcode scanners to assist exhibitors in liaising with delegates, and to track entry passes used by non-delegate visitors to the exhibition, of whom there were more than 300.

VALA Annual Report 2010/2011

VALA has had yet another busy and successful year in 2010/11.

During the year, our general meetings have continued to provide stimulating speakers on a wide range of topics (often followed by an enjoyable social event for those able to join speaker and Committee at dinner). The VALA Award, a Travel Scholarship and the VALA Student Awards were announced in November.

VALA Annual Report 2009/2010

VALA’s fifteenth biennial conference, held in February 2010 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, was, of course, the highlight of this year. On the theme “Connections. Content. Conversations”, the conference attracted the largest number yet (965) of delegates from throughout Australia and overseas, including 68 from New Zealand. The highly successful trade exhibition was also our largest yet, with 90 booths, and many non-delegates were able to visit the exhibition and the vendor presentations by using visitor passes. Despite expanding the trade exhibition, it was again completely sold out, and more booths could have been sold if there had been any space for them.

VALA Annual Report 2007/2008

VALA’s fourteenth biennial conference, held in February 2008 at the Melbourne Convention Centre, was, of course, the highlight of this year. On the theme Libraries: changing spaces, virtual places, the conference attracted the largest number yet (932) of delegates from throughout Australia and overseas, including 66 from New Zealand. The highly successful trade exhibition was also our largest yet, and many non-delegates were able to visit the exhibition and the vendor presentations by using visitor passes. Delegates were kept busy with the stimulating papers and presentations from six invited overseas keynote speakers and the considerable number of authors, from Australia and overseas, of submitted papers. Despite expanding the trade exhibition three times, it was again completely sold out, and more booths could have been sold if there had been any space for them.

The trade exhibition was also very successful, and many non-delegates were able to visit the exhibition and the vendor presentations by using visitor passes.
