VALA Events 2015: Make it a triple

VALA invites you to the first event for 2015.  Join us at the Baillieu Library on Wednesday 22nd April from 5:30pm.

Our speaker is Les Kneebone from Education Services Australia who will be speaking on the topic “Make it a triple: Australian Education Vocabularies and RDF“.

VALA Guest Speaker Event and Special General Meeting

Topic: Make it a triple: Australian Education Vocabularies and RDF

Education Services Australia (ESA) makes subject vocabularies freely available as RDF/XML. This helps to strategically position ESA as a key service provider within the schools sector. ESA vocabularies are consumed and implemented in both description and retrieval systems that support the education resource supply chain. Significant innovations have followed by embedding these vocabularies within machine-readable Australian Curriculum and teacher standards, allowing automation of teaching/ curriculum/ resource linking. The case for making vocabularies freely accessible is made clear by the semantic-web technologies that leverage them. But new challenges for compiling, maintaining and licensing arise in that context.

Les KneeboneSpeaker: Les Kneebone is the Metadata Services Manager at Education Services Australia

Les’s current project involves managing the Australian Education Vocabularies, including the Schools Online Thesaurus (ScOT), a controlled vocabulary used to describe school education resources. ScOT is also one of the vocabularies used to organise the Australian Curriculum and thereby link curriculum objectives to curriculum resources. He is also responsible for maintenance of the ANZ-LOM metadata profile and work within the SCIS standards committee to update SCIS Cataloguing Standards.

Les’s presentation will follow the business of the Special General Meeting, as advised to VALA members.
