VALA invites you to our June Guest Speaker event and VALA AGM. Join us at The Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne on Wednesday 28 June from 5:30pm.
Our speaker is Dr Rachel Buchanan, University of Melbourne Archives who will be speaking on the topic "Inside the seed bank".
VALA Guest Speaker Event and Annual General Meeting
Topic: “Inside the seed bank”
This talk considers the Germaine Greer Archive as a seed bank, a living collection of dormant material that preserves cultural, historical and political diversity. It explores how old and new technologies – arrangement and description, conservation, digitisation, social media and subject headings – can make archival records spring to life. Rachel Buchanan will use The Iran Album (1974), the telephone answering machine tape (1976) and the Ethiopia records (1984-85) as case studies of how this germination can work. These records illuminate the past but they are also emerging as powerful and playful actors in the present.
Q & A: Rachel is happy to respond to questions throughout the talk, but will also allow time for Q&A at the end.
