VALA2020 Presentation Formats

1. Concurrent Session Presentation

VALA’s valued peer review process will apply to those seeking a place in the prestigious Concurrent Sessions program. In response to author and reviewer feedback, the parameters for full paper submission will change in 2020 to reflect contemporary academic publishing standards.

These changes include:

  • A new range of 2,000-4,000 words for the finished paper
  • Freedom for authors to write in their preferred voice
  • Requirement for authors to provide their ORCID
  • VALA-supplied DOIs for all accepted papers

If an abstract is accepted for a Concurrent Session presentation, a full paper is required to be submitted by 23 August 2019, for peer review. Authors will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer input, edit and update papers, with final papers completed by 29 November 2019. Papers will be presented at the Conference in the nominated session and will be recorded.

2. Critical Conversation

In the more intimate Courtyard Rooms, Critical Conversations will take place café style. Abstracts need to include your topic, and background notes that provide the context and the argument for why your topic should be included, and what you seek to achieve. For example, you may be in the early stages of a project, or at a crossroads, where peer input and engagement would be valued. Accepted abstracts will be listed in the official conference program; authors will lead interactive, informal discussions with small groups. No paper is required.

3. E-Poster Presentation

VALA2020 also provides a platform for E-Poster presentations, which will be viewable as digital posters at the Conference and via the Conference App. A VALA2020 E-Poster template will be provided to accepted authors. Authors will have the opportunity to speak to their posters in a break out room designed for that purpose and will be listed in the official conference program. No paper is required.

4. Speakers’ Corner

Do you have a burning issue or a passion for lively, authentic debate? Want to pitch an idea? Got something to say in a fast-paced way? Put it on our radar and seek a place in the Speakers’ Corner sessions. Your abstract will provide a description of your subject and enough background to convince us that this is an emerging or important topic for our industry. No paper is required.

This is also a great opportunity for anyone seeking to step up to the plate for the first time (or for a quick time); Lightning Talks (8-10 minutes) will also be considered for inclusion in Speakers’ Corner.

5. Vendor Session Presentation

For the first time, VALA2020 includes dedicated space within the Concurrent Program for any Vendors who wish to produce a full paper without peer review. These will also represent the “best of” from the Call for Abstracts process as assessed by the Program Committee. If accepted, a full paper is required to be submitted by 29 November 2019. Papers will be presented at the Conference in the nominated session and will be recorded.

NOTE: Vendors are welcome to submit abstracts in either or both the Concurrent Session or Vendor Session format.
