Abstract

Increasingly, video and audio resources are being used in the university environment to educate, distribute research findings, and broadcast public lectures and events.  Despite significant advances in technology, creating and distributing open-to-view and open-to-re-use video can be complex. Swinburne Library has established a centralised service called Swinburne Commons that supports staff in the storage, description and distribution of open video and audio content. In reflecting on the establishment of the service, this paper suggests that experience gained from institutional repositories and open publishing endeavours can give libraries an advantage in the distribution of other institutionally-created content, such as digital media.

Abstract

Strategic journal publishing is a complex activity. Identifying appropriate publication outlets is a key component of a researcher’s publishing strategy. Considerations include a journal’s Field of Research (FoR) Code, impact data and Open Access options (mandatory for publications arising from funded research). To afford researchers more writing time but still enable strategic publishing, the Western Sydney University’s Library and Digital Humanities Research Group combined their expertise in publishing support resources, data manipulation and general purpose programming to develop Journal Finder. This toolkit organises existing information relating to journals and impact in ways that are relevant to the Australian situation and easily identifiable.

Vale Paul Reynolds

Paul Reynolds

The Library and Information world is saddened by the news that Paul Reynolds died on the weekend. A champion for open access and creative commons in Australasia, Paul will be sorely missed by many. His contribution to our industry has been invaluable as a commentator but also as an advocate for libraries.

He was awarded The Best Blogger of VALA 2010.  His contributions and questions at the conference were thoughtful and stimulating.

Paul’s work with mcgovernonline and the National Library of New Zealand has helped many understand the role that openness and sharing of information has in building community. Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends. His contributions to our industry are lasting.
