Public libraries around the world are redefining their roles and reinventing themselves in order to ensure their survival in a digital world. The iPad is the tipping point, a change that has been described as being as profound as the invention of the printing press.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear two library movers and shakers share their ideas on this trend: Christine Mackenzie from Victoria’s Yarra Plenty Regional Library will speak broadly on ‘Libraries After the iPad’, and John Blyberg from Darien Library in Connecticut will focus on ‘Top Technology Trends’. Christine Mackenzie is the CEO of Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service. She is past President of the Australian Library and Information Association and was awarded an ALIA Fellowship in 2008. Christine was a member of the Bertelsmann Foundation's International Network of Public Libraries, a select group of leading practitioners. In 2010, she led a tour of leading public libraries in the US. Christine is currently the chair of the International Federation of Library Association's Metropolitan Libraries Section, and a member ALIA's Online Content Regulation Group and the Australian Government's Public Lending Right Committee. John Blyberg is the Assistant Director for Innovation and User Experience at the Darien Library in Connecticut. He has an intense interest in technology, is an open source software advocate and considers unfettered collaboration and participation the primary intent of information technology. John was named a Library Journal ‘Mover and Shaker’, and took first prize in Talis’ 2006 ‘Mashing-up the Library’ competition. In 2009 he received the LITA/Brett Butler Entrepreneurship Award for his work on the SOPAC Application Suite. He speaks nationally and internationally about libraries, user experience, innovation, and technology. He also blogs at blyberg.net.
