Moving to Web scale: unlocking unprecedented efficiency, cooperation and collaborative innovation
Speaker: Chris Thewlis
Everyone seems to be throwing around phrases like "in the cloud" or "paradigm shifts of Web-scale proportion".
But do you have the knowledge to formulate how you will elevate your library's critical services -
including acquisition, circulation and license management - to the cooperative cloud?
Chris will talk about how Web scale is revitalising traditional services through shared workflows, activities and data.

Mapping the past: how new technologies are changing the way we view historical records
One of the more radical changes that the internet has brought about is our production and use of maps. The growth of GIS technologies has flowered in the form of the free map services offered by internet giants such as Google. Nevertheless, paper maps remain a record of previous understandings of place almost archaeological in nature. How do we bring together the old and the new, and mediate between the paper and the screen in this very special case?
This talk will look at the various tools that have made using digitised maps over the internet much simpler, and show off some of the ways Public Records Office Victoria has used those tools.

The regular VALA Meeting for March has been replaced by a joint seminar presented by VALA - Libraries, Technology and the Future, in association with the State Library of Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria Network.
Location: State Library of Victoria Date: Thursday 7 April 2011 Time: 2.00 p.m. - 5.00 p.m. Cost: This event is free, but you must register to attend. Afternoon tea is included.
Public libraries around the world are redefining their roles and reinventing themselves in order to ensure their survival in a digital world. The iPad is the tipping point, a change that has been described as being as profound as the invention of the printing press.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear two library movers and shakers share their ideas on this trend: Christine Mackenzie from Victoria’s Yarra Plenty Regional Library will speak broadly on ‘Libraries After the iPad’, and John Blyberg from Darien Library in Connecticut will focus on ‘Top Technology Trends’.
