Abstract

The Geelong Regional Library Corporation, in preparation for the opening of the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, is investigating the ways cutting edge technology can enhance archival material. The incorporation of Geelong’s Heritage Centre items into the library’s collection offered the perfect opportunity to experiment with how historical material might be presented in exciting new ways. Using the Oculus Rift virtual reality hardware, local turn-of-the-century stereoscopic images have been given new life, allowing patrons to experience the past with anticipated future technology. This paper details the considerations, background and implementation of this project.

Abstract

The CPA Australia Archives, a unique collection of records extending back 130 years, document the history of the organisation, the development of the accounting profession and the social and business history of Australia. These Archives are a rich source of information for academics and members of the public interested in their family history. To enhance access, CPA Australia and several Australian universities applied for and were successful in obtaining a linkage grant from Australian Research Council (ARC) to digitise the Archives. This paper discusses the digitisation process.

Abstract

From a single acorn a great oak grows. This phrase encapsulates the journey, so far, of the Victorian Electronic Records Strategy; better recognised these days as VERS. From its inception in 1995 the ideas formulated and contained in the report ‘Keeping Electronic Records Forever’ were the starting point to an ongoing collaborative effort between the Victorian State Government, Industry and Academia to find a practical way to deal with digital records. After giving a brief background on the VERS strategy to set the appropriate context, this paper draws together the major contributing factors for the continuing impetus of the program:-

  • developing the vision,
  • strategic planning,
  • lessons learnt from practical implementations,
  • VERS Centre of Excellence,
  • developing the digital archive, and
  • the future of the program.

Abstract

Archiving for permanent retention is facing some major challenges as we move into the next millennium. These include issues relating to selection from a burgeoning mass of information being produced in a wide range of formats; issues relating to media longevity and equipment obsolescence; migrating information across formats; the commercialisation of activities; the growing impact of IT requirements and the complexity of copyright and other rights in digital materials.
